Monitoring for construction site trailers

A jobsite has several trailers on it and nobody near them after the crew leaves. The first sign of a full tank, a tripped heater breaker or a broken door is usually a call from site.

Washroom trailers on site

A pressure sensor on each tank drain reads the fresh, grey and black levels to the percent, up to 4 tanks per hub. The app projects the pump-out date for each unit from its last week of use. You see that the restroom trailer by the gate has four days left and the two by the lunchroom have six, and you send one truck for all three on the day that suits the route.

The sensors read pressure at the drain, so sludge in a black tank does not stop them the way it stops a float switch. A float switch only reports a tank once it is full. Washroom trailers covers the full setup for a washroom unit; water tank monitoring explains how the sensors read a tank.

Site offices and lunchrooms

A site office trailer on a construction site usually heats off a genset or a temporary power pole, and either one can stop on a Friday night. The power monitor reads mains presence, battery voltage and current draw every minute. When the generator stops or a breaker trips, the alert reaches your phone within minutes, while the lines are still warm.

A battery backup keeps the hub, horn and status screen running after mains is lost, so the alarm on the trailer still sounds. A temperature sensor inside the unit adds a second alarm when the room drops below the threshold you set. Office trailers covers these units; power monitoring lists what the monitor reads and alerts on.

Nights and weekends

A camera mounted on the trailer sends a photo to your phone when it sees motion and saves a clip of about ten seconds with each event in the app. It follows armed hours you set, so a crew arriving at 6:30 a.m. does not trigger it. Night vision reaches 30 metres, and you can set off the camera's siren and floodlight from the app. The camera covers the trailer it is mounted on, not the site around it. Trailer security camera has the details.

No Wi-Fi on site

A jobsite trailer rarely has Wi-Fi, and the system does not need it. The horn, lights and status screen by the door run on the trailer and keep working with no signal at all. Phone alerts, history and the dashboard go over LTE on the hub's cellular connection. Where the signal is weak, an external antenna can be fitted to the hub.

The hub runs on 120 V mains or on 12/24 V solar and battery, so it works on a trailer that arrives before the site has power. Cellular connectivity covers what the connection needs and what still works without it.

ModSensors dashboard with tank, power and alarm history for each trailer

On the dashboard

The web dashboard shows your construction site trailers on one map, each with its tank, power and alarm history. The hub travels with the trailer, so when a unit leaves one job for the next, its history goes with it. Rules are set once and apply to every trailer, and each alert names the unit and the alarm, as in "ModSensors: motion at MS-2601". Each person on the alert list gets push, SMS or both, so the yard, the driver and the site contact are each reached their own way.

The hub and sensors go in during a new build or onto units already in the fleet, and a typical install takes an afternoon. Get a quote on the pricing page. Quotes go out the same day.

Common questions

Does it need Wi-Fi or power from the site?

No Wi-Fi. Phone alerts and the dashboard use the hub's cellular connection, and the horn, lights and status screen work with no signal. For power, the hub runs on the trailer's 120 V mains or on 12/24 V solar and battery, and a battery backup keeps the alarms running when mains is lost.

What happens when a trailer moves to a new site?

Nothing needs to be set up again. The hub and sensors are part of the trailer and go where it goes, along with its history. The dashboard shows the fleet on a map, so the office can see which units are on which job.

Is this a site security camera system?

No. The camera is mounted on the trailer and protects the trailer. If a unit comes back damaged or something is taken from it, you have the photo and the clip of about ten seconds from that moment. For the rest of the site you need a different product.

Can we fit it to trailers already on a job?

Yes. The sensors fit the standard drain fittings and nothing is cut, so a trailer of any age from any manufacturer takes the same hub. A typical install takes an afternoon, and it can be done with the trailer in place on the job.
